About A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Survival Training

A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Training, which stands for Assess, Leave, Impede, Violence, and Expose, was created in 2014 when Michael Julian began teaching his Active Shooter Survival philosophy throughout the United States. In addition, drawing from decades of experience in investigations and security, Julian developed this methodology as an alternative to traditional “Run, Hide, Fight” approaches.

Unlike programs that teach only methodology, A.L.I.V.E. emphasizes developing both a security mindset and survival mindset, recognizing that without the proper mental preparation, methodology alone becomes just mechanics. Moreover, the program focuses on empowering individuals with a survival mindset rather than just mechanical responses.

Also, in his book on the subject, “10 Minutes to Live: Surviving an Active Shooter Using A.L.I.V.E.” was published in 2017 and received endorsements from FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit experts, while the online version of the A.L.I.V.E. Training Program was launched in 2019 and is now part of corporate security training programs for companies throughout the world.

● “Michael Julian has written an excellent book. Practical, detailed, and a potential life
saver if you find yourself in the midst of a targeted attack.” – J. Reid Meloy, Ph.D.,

ABPP Forensic Consultant, FBI, Behavioral Analysis Unit Faculty
● “As a retired 32 year law enforcement veteran, with several years of SWAT and tactical experience, I learned some different unique perspectives as it pertains to civilians dealing with active shooters. Very good class for civilians who may have never experienced reacting to a life and death stressful situation.” – Christopher C.

Training Impact & Results:

In the event of an active shooter, the first 10 minutes can decide whether you will live or die. Most importantly, the A.L.I.V.E active shooter training protocol helps individuals calm their mind and make a plan, learning how to assess a situation as soon as the active shooter appears, understanding the best ways to respond given their surroundings to increase probability of survival.

Real-World Success Story: A Las Vegas Massacre shooting survivor credits A.L.I.V.E. active shooter training as the reason she is alive today. As a result, festival-goer Liz recalled that while many people around her were stricken with fear and unable to move, she remembered the words from Michael Julian’s book: “A moving target is harder to hit than a still one” – words that saved her life.

Who Should Take A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Training:

This training is valuable for organizations, businesses, schools, houses of worship, and individuals who want to be prepared for active shooter scenarios. In addition, the program helps Human Resource, Risk and Safety/Security Managers train their employees and allows Security Professionals to save more lives while generating revenue.

Legal Mandate: OSHA, Active Shooters, and Employer Negligence

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, specifically through the General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1)), requires employers to provide a workplace “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.” The 2013 decision involving Hennepin County, MN, significantly reinforced this regulation by holding the employer liable for negligence and failing to provide adequate training.

The court directly cited the employer’s liability to train employees to “recognize the indicators of the potential active shooter and how to respond” during an actual incident. This ruling established that workplace violence, including active shooter events, falls under the scope of recognized workplace hazards, creating a clear legal precedent and a resulting responsibility for employers to implement robust, preventative, and responsive active shooter training programs.
